The highlight of last weeks race was the return of Chris Brown to the winches of Circe. The wenches of Circe were also happy to see him.
The low light though was the absence of Nansi, Susan, and Mike. Steve, of course, was still down south, and Ryan was likely again thwarted by Gardner traffic. So, we went out severely short handed with Kathleen very much alone on the foredeck, Chris and Pam on the jib sheets, and Skipper Ron multitasking on main and tiller.
The forecast was for 10 knts out of the east and dying. So we went with the big #1 despite the short crew. But it was also cool and foggy. Chris seemed to think for some bizarre reason just because it was the middle of June it might be warm and arrived with way too much skin exposed and unprotected. He quickly put on a foal weather jacket.
Ron's starts have not been sterling of late with a full crew so with the added distraction of the main it did not improve. But we weren't last across. Dove was behind us.
But we were playing catch up with Veloche again and were gradually reeling her in when we approached the weather mark at the east end of the Bay and noticed Veloche falling way off and other boats furling sails and them heard 3 load toots.
The cement boat was backing out the Keating Channel and the race had been abandoned. One other thing we forgot was to turn the radio on and had missed the race committee notification. Then the fog set in and the island disappeared for a few minutes as we were downing the main just off Ward's Island.
So that was all there was. We went in and drank Chris's wine and ate the cheese and crackers he had brought then went up for beer and dinner and get warm.
So, who's on for this Wednesday? Nansi has a conflict so can't make it.
